The UK Gambling Commission has announced a sweeping overhaul of advertising standards that will take effect on April 1, 2026. The new rules significantly tighten how operators can promote bonuses, use influencer marketing, and target audiences on social media platforms.
Under the new framework, operators will be prohibited from advertising welcome bonuses that contain wagering requirements above 10x the bonus amount in their headline claims. Smaller print disclosures of restrictive terms will also face tighter scrutiny, with the Commission requiring "clear and prominent" communication of all material conditions.
The influencer marketing crackdown is perhaps the most significant change. Any individual with more than 50,000 social media followers who promotes gambling products will need to be registered with the Commission and adhere to the same standards as direct operator advertising. This captures a large number of streamers, podcasters, and content creators who have become prominent in the gambling marketing ecosystem.
Industry groups have expressed concern that the rules are too prescriptive and could push players toward unlicensed operators. The Commission has acknowledged this risk but maintains that consumer protection must take priority.
Operators have until March 15 to submit compliance plans and will face inspections starting in May. Fines for non-compliance can reach up to 5% of UK-derived gross gambling yield.
